In a post on the social media platform X, the Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot (Francophone centrist) has reacted to the Israeli attack on targets in Iran and Iran’s response to it.
"The Israeli strikes on Iran and the Iranian response mark a dangerous turning point ", says Belgian Foreign Minister
In his post Mr Prévot said that “The Israeli strikes on Iran and the Iranian response mark a dangerous turning point. I am gravely concerned by any action that fuels further instability in an already volatile region. Belgium urges all actors to show maximum restraint and avoid escalation at all costs. We are actively monitoring the situation. At this point, we have no indication of Belgian casualties”.
“These military developments should not adversely affect diplomatic efforts: the negotiations table remains a much better option than the battlefield, especially as a new round of U.S.–Iran nuclear talks was scheduled this Sunday in Oman. The IAEA had already warned of alarming progress in Iran’s uranium enrichment.”
“We strongly oppose the development of nuclear capacity for military purpose by the Iranian regime. Now, hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough may be slipping away. At a time when the world needs de-escalation and solutions, we must not abandon the path of dialogue. Only diplomacy can prevent the worst”, Mr Prévot said.
