Protest at Beurs: still no Brussels government after a year (VIDEO)

Crowds gathered at the Beursplein in downtown Brussels today to protest against the political situation in the Brussels region. Exactly 1 year after the elections, the Brussels Capital Region still has no government. Those present held a big citizens' picnic.

Several hundred people took part in the protest. The demonstrators sat down en masse on the square. "We have not resigned ourselves to the political situation. We want our city to be properly governed once again," one of those present told VRT.

"Every day thousands of people get up to clean the city, to do social work, to organise the city.... All these people do their best, but we expect the same from our politicians," says Frederik Lamote of Respect Brussels, the organisation that organised the citizens' picnic. ‘Everyone thinks our city deserves better.’

‘I feel a sense of vicarious shame for our politicians, because they are dysfunctional and incapable of having a constructive conversation with each other,’ says Niels. ‘This is just painful.’
