Mural honours 11-year-old killed in police chase

A mural of 11-year-old Fabian, who was killed on a scooter during an accident during a police chase in a Brussels park, has appeared on a facade on the Papenvest in the centre of the capital. The drawing is a work by artist HMI CNN and is based on a photo taken at the vigil for the boy from Jette (Brussels).

Originally, artist HMI wanted to make another drawing, but Fabian's tragic story affected him so severely he had to do something with it, the artist told Brussels media outlet BRUZZ. He sympathises greatly with the family.

The painting appears on the street-side facade of a apartment building, on the corner of Papenvest and Grootsermentstraat. The work is still in progress, and should normally be finished by Thursday.

HMI is a Brussels street artist and part of the CNN collective. Among other things, that collective already painted a large mural on the façade of the Roger Decamps retirement and care home in Evere (Brussels).

Police chase

Eleven-year-old Fabian was killed on Monday evening after he was hit by a police car in the Elisabeth Park in Ganshoren (Brussels). The police were chasing him for allegedly fleeing from a police checkpoint on an electric scooter. During that chase, according to eyewitnesses, he fell and the police drove into him. He died of his injuries at the UZ Brussels Hospital shortly afterwards.
