Haribo is recalling the sweets because consumption can lead to health problems. The batch number involved is the same as the sweets in which cannabis was found in the Netherlands. It is not clear in which Belgian shops the large packs were sold. Consumers are asked to send the product to Haribo’s Belgian headquarters.

Which candy bags are affected?

These are kilo bags of the Happy Cola F!ZZ product, with an expiry date ‘until January 2026’, and production code L341-4002307906. Haribo is asking Belgian consumers who have this product at home not to return it to the shop, but to send it, including the packaging, to the Belgian head office: HARIBO Belgium bv, Duffelsesteenweg 233, 2550 Kontich. Customers are asked to add their details and bank account number so that they can get their money back.

Illness in the Netherlands

Late last week, it became emerged that cannabis had been discovered in the same kilo bags of cola candy in the Netherlands. Several people, both children and adults, had fallen ill after eating the cola bottle sweets and subsequently reported it to the police.

‘How the cannabis got into the candies is as yet unknown,’ the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority said last week.

In the Netherlands, so far 3 contaminated bags have surfaced, but as a precautionary measure, Haribo is recalling the entire stock in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

No illness reported in Belgium

According to the Federal Food Safety Agency there are no reports as yet in Belgium of people becoming unwell after eating the sweets. Contact a GP immediately if you eat the sweets.
