The fire broke out on a construction site just in front of the Justus Lipsius building, which houses the offices of the European Council and the Council of the European Union. According to the fire brigade, there is no danger to surrounding EU offices or the Schuman metro station.

The fire brigade says that burning power cables caused the blaze. ‘The fire has been extinguished and Brussels power grid operator Sibelga is on scene to deal with the situation,’ said fire brigade spokesman Walter Derieuw.

Exactly how the fire was able to start is currently unclear.

Reconstruction of Schuman Square

Since autumn 2023 Beliris, the federal fund for Brussels, has been renovating Schuman Square. By the summer of 2026, the square should be completely converted into a green pedestrian zone with a canopy.
