‘On Sunday around 4pm, the victim intervened when the suspect was harassing a woman. A skirmish ensued during which the suspect stabbed the victim. Afterwards, the culprit immediately fled the scene,’ Wouter Bruyns of Antwerp police told VRT NEWS.

Members of Antwerp police’s cycling team were able to arrest the suspect shortly afterwards. He is an 18-year-old man, holder of Eritrean nationality. He was recognised on the basis of the description given by witnesses. His involvement is being investigated. Police have also collected accounts from other witnesses as well as camera footage.

‘It seems that the victim had nothing to do with the incident itself. This person intervened when the suspect was harassing someone else,’ police said.

Victim dies

The victim received care and was resuscitated at the scene. Afterwards, the 32-year-old man was transferred to hospital fighting for his life. On Monday morning, the Antwerp public prosecutor's office announced that the man had died.

‘We have asked an investigating judge to investigate what happened and consider manslaughter charges,’ said Kristof Aerts of the public prosecutor's office. ‘Last night investigators attended the scene. The suspect is an 18-year-old man and he will be questioned by the investigating judge today.’
