A police officer that involved in an accident in which a scooter rider was killed was driving without a valid driving licence. The accident happened in the centre of Brussels earlier this month. Those investigating the accident have discovered that the policeman’s licence had been revoked in 2023 after he had been found guilty of speeding. The police officer will now have to appear before magistrates.
The accident happened on 11 May on the Blaesstraat in the centre of Brussels. The scooter rider reportedly failed to give priority and he crashed into the police car. Both the scooter and the police car were not exceeding the speed limit, and the police car was not involved in a chase.
The prosecutor’s office is now carrying out 2 separate investigations, one concerning the accident and a second into the police officer driving without a licence.
The prosecutor’s office adds that it was only after very detailed checks by the examining magistrate in charge of the investigation that it was discovered that the police officer was driving without a licence. His driving licence had been revoked by a magistrates’ court in Liège and he had been ordered to re-sit his driving test. However, he never did.
The police officer has been arrested and will appear before magistrates soon.
