The police presence in Antwerp’s Jewish quarter will be increased after two Israeli embassy staff members were shot dead in Washington, DC.

Two employees of the Israeli embassy were shot dead near the city’s Jewish Museum on Thursday morning. Police have since arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting. “Following the deadly attack on two employees of the Israeli embassy in Washington, police efforts to protect the Jewish community in Antwerp will be stepped up,” said the office of acting mayor Koen Kennis, of N-VA. There has already been increased security in Antwerp’s Jewish neighbourhood due to the war in Gaza.

“The Jewish community in Antwerp can count on continued increased police protection, with the deployment of both local and federal police officers,” Kennis’ office said. “In light of the terrible events in the US, we are planning to increase our efforts and extra vigilance.”

Antwerp police are also in contact with Shmira, a volunteer organisation that provides assistance to the Jewish community in Flanders.
