A suspect has been detained in connection with a fatal stabbing in the East Flemish town of Eeklo. On Tuesday morning a woman died after being stabbed in the grounds of the Sint-Jan Psychiatric Centre in Eeklo. The person in charge of Sint-Jan says that the victim and her assailant had no connection to the Centre.
The stabbing took place at around 8:30am. What exactly happened is still being investigated. The Head of the Sint-Jan-Psychiatric Centre Kenneth Nuytinck told VRT News that “We tried to administer first aid as quickly as possible and we called the emergency services straight away”.
However, efforts to save the woman’s life were in vain and she died at the scene. Mr Nuytinck added that neither the victim nor the assailant are in any way connected to the hospital.
"According to our information the victim was a passer-by, a mother that had just dropped her child off at a near-by school”, Mr Nuytinck told VRT News.
Short-cut
People often pass the grounds of the Sint-Jan Psychiatric Centre as it is a short-cut between two areas of Eeklo. Mr Nuytinck says that several people witnessed the stabbing.
The East Flemish prosecutor’s office says that a suspect has been detained. They are remaining otherwise tight-lipped about the stabbing so as to not hamper the investigation.
