Disruption expected during Socialist Trade Union’s 24-hour national strike on Tuesday

On Tuesday 20 May the socialist trade union (ABVV/BBTK/ACOD) will be staging a 24-hour national strike in protest against the federal government's socio-economic policies. As during previous strikes and days of action, there is likely to be considerable disruption to public transport and other public services.

For the 24th day so far this year there will be strike action on Belgium’s railways. The strike gets underway at 10pm om Monday evening and continues until 10pm on Tuesdays.

Meanwhile, many drivers and other staff that work for the Flemish public transport company De Lijn, the Brussels public transport company MIVB and the Walloon public transport company TEC are expected to strike. This will result in a revised timetable using drivers that have reported for work. For an accurate picture of the situation on the ground visit the website of De Lijn  , MIVB , or TEC  .

In addition to the disruption on public transport there is also likely to be strike action at the Prison Service, Justice Department, the Post Office (Bpost) as well as disruption to refuse collection in many areas.

As with previous strikes and days of action the members of the socialist trade union will be striking against the federal government socio-economic plans, not least its pension reform plans. The Federal Government’s austerity measures are also strongly opposed by the socialist trade union.

This time the socialist trade union is striking alone with the Christian and liberal trade unions having opted to focus on negotiation and dialogue with the Federal Government in the hope to get the measures modified before they become law.

There will be further protest on Thursday with a demonstration by those that work in the non-profit sector.

24-hour rail strike

From 10pm on Monday a 24-hour strike will commence on Belgian Railways. This too is in protest at the Federal Government plans.

An alternative timetable will be operation for ther duration of the strike. 3 out of 5 intercity (IC) trains will be running as will around 50 of the L Train local stopping services. Many special commuter services (P Train) are expected to be cancelled. Visit NMBS’ website  or its app to find out if the service you wish to use is running.
