According to figures from the road safety institute Vias, the number of road deaths in Belgium fell by 6% last year compared with 2023. In 2024 455 people lost their lives in accidents on the Belgium’s roads. This is the lowest number recorded since official figures on road deaths started to be kept in the early 1970s.
Vias asked the country’s police services for figures on the number of people that had died of their injuries less than 30 days after having been involved in a road traffic accident. Among all categories of road-users with the exception of e-scooter and motorcycle riders, the number of traffic accident fatalities fell in 2024
In Flanders the number of road traffic fatalities fell by 5% to 248. In Wallonia there were 197 road traffic fatalities in 2024, 9% fewer than in 2023. However, in the Brussels-Capital Region the number of fatalities on the roads doubled from 5 in 2023 to 10 in 2024. Nevertheless, this is still far lower than the 21 deaths that were recorded on the capital’s roads in 2022.
Vias says that although the figures show a positive trend, we should not be too euphoric. In 2021 Vias set a goal of reducing the number of road traffic deaths to 320 per annum by 2030.
