Flemish nationalist party N-VA supports French President’s plan to recognise Palestine as a state

The leader of the Flemish nationalist party N-VA, Valerie Van Peel (photo above) has said in an interview with VRT News that her party supports the plan by the French President Emmanuel Macron to recognise Palestine as a state. Ms Van Peel was speaking on VRT Radio 1’s morning news and current affairs programme ‘De ochtend’.

It is the first time the party has given clarity regarding its position on what has been a sensitive issue among the parties that form Belgium’s federal coalition government. Ms Van Peel says that the federal cabinet will discuss President Macron’s plan soon.

On Wednesday morning the leader of N-VA made her party’s position on the conflict in Gaza clear. Valerie Van Peel said that her party colleague, the Federal Prime Minister Bart De Wever, has spoken to President Macron and that he supports the French president’s plan for a two-state solution. “The plan will be discussed at the cabinet table”.

Ms Van Peel words are in line with what Mr De Wever says in a podcast made by the commercial media company DPG. During a meeting with the Dutch Prime Minister Dirk Schoof, Mr De Wever said that the humanitarian situation in Gaza should not be allowed to continue any longer “When you see images of starving children there is only one reaction and that is that this must stop”.
