Metro passengers in Anderlecht (Brussels) have been evacuated from a tunnel after smoke filled the air. A small electrical fire under a metro carriage was presumably caused by problems with the batteries. 5 passengers were taken to hospital with mild smoke poisoning. The fire has since been extinguished.
Smoke was detected around noon between the Clemenceau and Delacroix stops. Passengers in the metro carriage were evacuated by the fire brigade. 5 people had to go to hospital with mild smoke intoxication. 3 MIVB technicians received treatment at the scene.
Walter Derieuw of the Brussels Fire Brigade explained: "We extinguished the fire with powder extinguishers. MIVB services are checking the technical installation."
