A mysterious herd of elephants turned up on Antwerp's Operaplein on Wednesday. The behemoths had previously visited Brussels and Liège. Who they are or what the purpose of their visit is, no one yet knows. In a few weeks’ time, the organisation behind these wandering artworks will provide more information.
Passers-by could not believe their eyes. "I happened to walk past and did think it was quite special. I am now trying to look up more information" one said.
But organisers are not yet revealing any information on where the elephants come from and what exactly they are doing here. There was a lot of speculation among passers-by. "Elephants always walk in groups, and in busy places like the Opera Square, you often see many groups of people. I have no idea but I will definitely try to find out what this is about," says Axel, who happened to make his way past the elephants on his way to school.
The people looking after the elephants don’t know very much about their purpose either. "We are just monitoring. We don't know what the point is either. I think it's just beautiful art, or maybe they want to draw more attention to the endangered species," says supervisor Aaron.
