Woman seriously injured in wild boar attack

A woman was seriously injured in an attack by a wild boar in nature reserve 't Steen in Meerhout (Antwerp). It happened while she was taking a walk with her dog. ‘It is possible the wild boar was protecting a nest and the animal felt threatened,’ says mayor Fons Hannes. The local council is now posting warning signs.

It was around 11 o'clock this morning that the woman, aged 60, was attacked by a wild boar while walking her dog in nature reserve 't Steen. ‘The dogwalker was transferred to Geel Hospital with quite serious injuries,’ Mayor Fons Hannes said.

‘She suffered deep cuts, probably caused by the animal’s teeth. I have not yet spoken to the woman, but I hear it was quite a dramatic incident.’

Meerhout town council wants to avoid any more casualties and has posted warning signs on the approach roads to the nature reserve.’

'We certainly do not want to make people scared, but it is important to keep your dog on a leash and to keep a close eye on the bushes during walks. When you realise a boar can weigh up to 150 kilograms, you know an attack should not be underestimated," the mayor concludes.
