As we reported on Friday , the accident occurred on Friday at the Warande Bridge, a lift bridge on the Ringvaart Canal in Bruges. According to the police, the driver had driven through the barriers designed to prevent motorists from attempting to drive over the bridge when it is open. The bridge was already open and the car ended up in the canal.

On board were a grandfather (73) and his two grandchildren. They were all French tourists visiting Bruges. One of the children that was aboard the vehicle, a 13-year-old boy, was able to get free. The 73-year-old grandfather and his 10-year-old granddaughter were rescued by the Fire Service divers. They were resuscitated at the scene and taken to hospital in a critical condition.
