The number of driving offences recorded on the country’s roads rose by around 10% between 2022 and 2024. According to figures from the Federal Justice Department 700,000 more traffic offences were recorded in 2024 than was the case in 2022. Speeding remains the traffic offence more frequently than committed on Belgium’s roads. Excess speed is the cause of 1 in 3 road deaths in Belgium.
Each year the Federal Justice Department collects and publishes figures on road traffic offences. In 2024 6.9 million traffic offences were recorded on our roads. This is up from 6.2 million in 2022 and 6.5 million in 2023. Of the 6.9 million offences committed in Belgium as a whole, 4.4 million (63% of the total) were committed in Flanders.
While the number of traffic offences committed in Flanders has fallen slightly since 2022, it has increased significantly in Wallonia and Brussels (by 44% and 31% respectively). The fact that the regional authorities in both Brussels and Wallonia have installed many more speed cameras in recent years may go someway to accounting for the increase. Around a third of all driving offences are committed by someone behind the wheel of a company car.
More chance of being caught
The Federal Justice Department also says that the chance of being caught committing a traffic offence is increasing. The number of offences detected by mobile cameras increased by 10 per cent between 2023 and 2024. The scrapping of tolerance margins on motorways also plays a role in increasing the chance of being caught.
