Man and child in a critical condition after car veers off the road and into a canal in Bruges

A car with 3 people aboard veered off the road and into the Ringvaart canal in the West Flemish city of Bruges earlier on Friday. A grandfather and his 2 grandchildren were in the car at the time. One of the children was able to get out of the car under their own steam. A second child and the grandfather were freed by the emergency services. They have been taken to hospital where they are in a critical condition.

The mayor of Bruges Dirk De fauw (Christian democrat) told VRT News that “The car drove through the barrier at the side of the canal. In the car were a grandfather with 2 grandchildren. 1 of the children managed to free themselves from the car. With the help of bystanders, the child was able to get back onto dry land.”

“The accident happened close to the fire station, so fire service divers were at the scene very quickly. They were able to pull the 2 other people out of the water. One of them has already been taken to hospital. The other is still being resuscitated at the scene.”, Mr De fauw said.

WATCH

The accident has closed the Warande Bridge. How long it will remain closed for is still unclear. Bruges Police are advising people to avoid the area.

The Komvest is closed from the Leopold I-laan. However, the city’s ring road has remained open.
