At least 2 women have contacted the police alleging that they were raped by a student that was working as a barman at the Zeezicht café in Antwerp. The news of the rape allegations first appeared in the daily ‘De Morgen’ and has since been confirmed by VRT News sources. The proprietors of the bar have expressed their shock at what has happened. “Our thoughts go out to the victims”.
The man allegedly deliberately got the women drunk and then raped them. Lawyer Manon Cop confirms that she is representing 2 victims. “I don't want to comment further in order to preserve the serenity of the investigation.”
The alleged offences are said to have been committed over a lengthy period of time. There are also said to be more than two victims. However, the Antwerp prosecutor's office cannot confirm this.
Proprietors: “Whole team is deeply shocked”
The owners of the café say that they and their staff are deeply shocked. “The whole team was very shocked by all this. These acts are unacceptable and we disapprove of them in the strongest terms”.
“Café Zeezicht has always strived to be a safe and welcoming place for everyone. We place great importance on respect, equality and ensuring an environment where everyone feels welcome and safe. We deeply regret the fact that these values have been violated”.
They go on to say that their thoughts go out to the victims. "We offer them our complete support. We sympathise with all victims of harassment, violence and abuse in whatever form”.
