Police services across Belgium are carrying out extra checks on speeding motorists today (Wednesday 9 April). At 6am what is the 22nd so-called “Speed Camera Marathon” got underway. The operation runs until 6am on Thursday.
The primary aim of the “Speed Camera Marathon” is to encourage drivers to moderate their speed and stick to the speed limit everywhere and at all times. Excess speed remains one of the main causes of road accidents.
During the last speed camera marathon in November, just over 3% of the motorists checked were found to be speeding. 56 motorists had their driving licences revoked. In April 2024 6% of motorists were found to be speeding.
The operation is not only confined to Belgium. The European traffic police network Roadpol says that more than 20 countries across Europe are taking part in today’s “Speed Camera Marathon”.
