1,779 jobs under threat as Cora announces plans to close its 7 hypermarkets in Belgium

The hypermarket chain Cora has announced that it intends to close all 7 of its stores in Belgium by the beginning of next year. Cora has 5 hypermarkets in Wallonia and 2 stores in Brussels, 1 in Anderlecht and the other in Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe. A total of 1,779 people work for Cora’s Belgian operation.

The news of the plan to close the 7 hypermarkets was announced at an extraordinary Works Council meeting that was held on Tuesday morning. Cora is part of the Belgian retail company Louis Delhaize Group. In addition to its 7 Belgian stores, Cora also has 61 hypermarkets in France and 10 stores in Romania.

Cora says that it has attempted to find buyers for its Belgian hypermarkets. However, “there was no interest to take over the shops given the current market conditions”.

Last year, Cora’s 2 hypermarkets in Luxembourg were taken over by the French retailer E.Leclerc.
