Hundreds of people, many of whom students, took to the streets of Leuven (Flemish Brabant) and Ghent (East Flanders) on Thursday evening. They were protesting against a decision by the Leuven Criminal Court not to pass sentence on a man that it had convicted of rape.
Protest in Leuven and Ghent against court’s decision not to pass sentence on man convicted of rape
Meanwhile, the Flemish Justice Minister Zuhal Demir (nationalist) has also reacted. Speaking on VRT television, Ms Demir called for campaigns to be launched to make the public aware of issues surrounding transgressive behaviour.
Demonstrations
In both Ghent and Leuven, hundreds of people, many of whom students, protested against the decision not to pass sentence on a medical student convicted of raping a female student he had met in a Leuven bar.
One of the reasons given by the judge at the Criminal Court in Leuven for its decision was that the 24-year-old man is “young and talented”. During the protests the demonstrators held up placards reading “What about her talent?” to show their support for the victim.
Inflencer Acid
Meanwhile, the well-known Flemish YouTube personality Acid has added fuel to the fire by revealing the rapist’s name online. Acid has done this in past. Previously he published the names of the members of a student fraternity some of whom that were on trial for their alleged involvement in the events that led to the death of the student Sanda Dia during a hazing ritual. However, the names of people that were not in any way connected to Sanda Dia’s death were also published. Acid was prosecuted over this and now the public prosecutor’s office is investigating Acid once again.
Awareness Campaign
The Flemish Justice Minister Zuhal Demir (nationalist) says that it is her view that Flemish Government should launch campaigns to make the public aware of the issues surrounding transgressive behaviour. Ms Demir promised that action will be taken during an interview with VRT News.
