Leuven University Hospital suspends gynaecology student that escaped sentencing after having been convicted of rape

Leuven University Hospital has suspended a medical student that was convicted of raping another student but was not sentenced for his crime. As we reported on Tuesday, the judge at the Leuven Criminal Court refrained from passing sentence on the 24-year-old.

This means that although he was convicted of the rape, he will not have a criminal record nor will he have to comply with any probation terms.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening Leuven University Hospital (UZ Leuven) and Leuven University (KU Leuven) said “UZ Leuven and KU Leuven learned today via the press of the Criminal Court’s judgement concerning serious sexual offences committed in 2023 by a medical student. The student in question is currently training as a specialist in the field of gynaecology."

Chief physician Gert Van Assche said that "First and foremost our thoughts go out to the victim. Together with KU Leuven we will look at the court’s ruling and examine how we will go on from there. In the meantime, as a precautionary measure the doctor concerned has been suspended from duties at the hospital”.
