Bruges residents got the surprise of their lives yesterday when a SUV drove into the façade of a terraced house in the West Flemish capital last night. A woman driver lost control of the wheel, rammed into a road sign and a parked car and then drove into people’s living room uninvited. Fortunately, the residents, two sisters, were at sleep upstairs at the time and were not injured. The woman driver was rushed to hospital.
The accident roused several local residents from their sleep as they were woken up shortly before 1.30am by a loud bang. After the off-road vehicle veered off course and crashed into a living room a huge hole became visible in the façade of the building.
How the accident could happen was still unclear. Police are investigating the matter.
The woman driver was taken to hospital for treatment. She had sustained only minor injuries. Her car, and also the parked car that was hit, were write-offs and had to be towed away.
‘We checked the stability of the house and gas supplier Fluvius also attended the scene,’ a spokesman for the fire brigade noted. The upper floor remained undamaged. ‘The 2 sisters can stay in their home for now. The ground floor will be propped up and sealed.’
