Russian hackers target big Belgian websites with little success

The Russian hackers’ collective NoName has attacked several major Belgian websites including MyGov.be that provides Belgian citizens with access to official documents as well as the platform of the Walloon Parliament.

Investigations conducted by VRT News reveal that Russian hackers are trying to take some Belgian websites offline.

The collective is taking action because it is alleged Belgium offered 1 billion euros to Ukraine. ‘Defence Minister Theo Francken mentioned this during a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky,’ it is claimed online.

Since this morning Belgium’s Centre for Cybersecurity has been aware of the attack and has taken action: the situation is constantly being monitored, and the centre has alerted the organisations targeted.

According to the Centre, this is a ‘DDOS attack’, in which an awful lot of traffic is directed to websites at the same time, making them inaccessible.

According to VRT NEWS checker Luc Van Bakel the hackers form part of a well-known group. ‘They have targeted Belgium on several occasions in the past. In the run-up to the 9 June 2024 general elections, they took down several municipal websites.’

Most of the websites initially affected no longer seem to be experiencing any problems.
