According to figures from released by the Flemish Statistics Bureau Statistiek Vlaanderen, around one million people in Flanders cannot afford a week's holiday away from home.
In 2024, 14.7% of people in our region said they could not afford a week's holiday. This is an increase compared to 2023 when the figure was 13.5%.
Nevertheless, Flanders still fares better than Belgium’s other two regions. In the Brussels-Capital and Walloon regions, 30% of those surveyed said that they were unable to afford a week’s holiday. The figure for Belgium as a hole is 21%.
Unemployed people (47%), those that rent their homes (36%) and single-parent families (32%) are more likely to be unable to afford to go away for a week’s holiday.
