Four people have died when the car they were travelling in was involved in a head-on crash on the N41 at Elversele near Temse in East Flanders. Among those killed in the crash are a 1-year-old baby and a 5-year-old child. The cause of the accident is still unclear.
The accident happened at around 2:30am on Friday. A car collided head-on with a van inside a road tunnel on the N41 in Elversele. Inside the car were 4 members of the same Syrian family. The family lived in the East Flemish town of Sint-Niklaas. They all died in the crash. They were a 26-year-old woman, her 24-year-old sister and 2 children aged 1 and 5.
The driver of the van, a 25-year-old man from Rupelmonde, was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
The victims’ family went to the scene straight away. The mayor of Temse Hugo Maes (Christian democrat) told VRT News that “This is awful. The family members are being looked after by Victim Support nearby in Emiel Naudts Hall. There they were able to say goodbye”.
Lise De Wilde of the East Flemish prosecutor’s office said “It is still unclear how the accident happened. We have appointed a traffic accident investigation expert to look into the cause”.
