Mum with 2 young kids in buggy crosses rail tracks at Sint-Niklaas station (VIDEO)

Railtrack operator Infrabel has shared images on social media showing a mother of two crossing the rail tracks at Sint-Niklaas station with her pushchair and two children in it.  ‘It’s unacceptable,’ says Infrabel. ‘Walking on railway tracks can lead to high fines. Moreover it creates a mortally dangerous situation.’ Infrabel is calling on anybody witnessing such actions to report track walkers via emergency number 1711.

Footage shows the mother struggling to lift the buggy, with two children in it, over the tracks. Among other things, she loses a bottle of water and a blanket in the process. As she picks up the items, the buggy remains standing in the middle of the tracks. Eventually, the woman and children make it across without injury.

‘This is mind-blowing. Don't do this,’ Infrabel says. ‘Not only do you risk a big fine, but you are also risking your life. In this instance, the woman is also risking the lives of her children. Every station also has safe crossing points, such as a tunnel or bridge to move from platform to platform.’

The footage dates from 23 February 2025. The woman was not fined for walking on the tracks. Infrabel isn’t filing a complaint either. The rail track operator points out that there is always a safe crossing point near stations and that there is never a valid reason to cross the tracks in any other way.

Infrabel calls on bystanders who see people walking on the tracks to report it via the emergency number 1711 so that the necessary measures can immediately be taken to avoid accidents.
