Sweden’s Greta Thunberg joins Code Rood activists blockading food company Cargill in Port of Ghent (VIDEO)

Several hundred climate activists from the organisation Code Rood (Code Red) blocked access to food company Cargill in the port of Ghent on Saturday in protest against the agribusiness’s activities. Cargill is a major producer of food and agricultural products, including from Brazil. Police arrested around 100 activists. Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was on hand to reinforce Code Rood’s message.

Organisers say 600 protesters took part.  The police speak of 400.  Police detained one hundred activists during the course of the afternoon. Cargill has accused the protesters of acts of vandalism.  Police say the windscreens of several lorries were damaged.

‘The activists include farmers,’ one of the Code Rood spokespersons told VRT. ‘For the first time, farmers and climate activists are joining forces.’

The group says it is taking action in solidarity with farmers. ‘This industry makes huge profits, at the expense of farmers, consumers and the climate,’ another spokesperson insisted.
