In Heverlee (Leuven), police caught a driver using 2 mobile phones at the same time. The thirty-something was talking on the phone while he was driving when a plainclothes officer noticed him. Suddenly, while still on the move, the motorist picked up a second mobile device.
Driver using 2 mobile phones at the wheel doesn't even notice police approach
The plainclothes policeman was patrolling the Naamsesteenweg in Heverlee on Monday afternoon when he noticed the driver in his car. The man in his 30s, who hailed from Liege in Wallonia, was talking on the phone with his mobile phone in his hand while driving. Suddenly he also picked up a second mobile phone and switched round the two devices while slowly driving.
The man was clearly not paying attention to the traffic or to the officer watching him. A police patrol was alerted to the driver. Even when they came driving alongside his vehicle, he did not notice the police car. Only after the officers turned on their flashing blue lights did the Walloon motorist notice that police were watching him.
‘When the officers pulled over the driver, he still tried to convince them that he had only been holding the mobile phone when his car was stationary in a traffic jam, which is also prohibited by the way,’ police spokesman Marc Vranckx explains. ‘He also claimed this was the first time he had committed the offence and it had been a very busy time at work, he added.’
Driving licence withdrawn
The local prosecutor's office ordered the man's driving licence to be revoked immediately for 15 days. The offender was obliged to pull over his car on the spot. The vehicle also lacked a valid registration and insurance document, which earned the driver an additional entry in the official police report.
