Police to hold 2-day national operation against people being distracted while driving

The federal and local police services are once again to stage a national 48-hour operation against people being distracted while driving. The operation aims not only to make people aware of the dangerous of using a (smart)phone while driving, but also of other distractions they might encounter while behind the wheel.

Both uniformed and plain cloths officers will be used. The operation got underway at midnight and will continue until midnight tomorrow night. In a press statement the police services say that “Both the Federal Highways Police and the local police services will carry out targeted checks on motorists that are distracted while driving. By announcing that the operation is taking place, we want drivers to reflect. This is irresponsible behaviour that remains one of the main killers on our roads.”

The police call on motorists to respect the safety rules and to find a hands-free solution to prevent dangerous situations from occurring.
