Armed man runs away from police outside Brussels metro station

There has been another incident involving firearms near to the Clemenceau metro station in the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht. The news first appeared in the daily ‘Het Laatste Nieuws’ and has since been confirmed by a police spokeswoman.

At around 10pm on Tuesday evening a man carrying a gun got out of a car near to the metro station. When he saw a police patrol he fled.

Sarah Frederickx of the Brussels South Local Police Service told VRT News that "This was a person that was acting suspiciously and was carrying a long firearm with him. When he saw the police he fled immediately”.

The suspect is currently still at large

This is just the latest in a series of incidents involving firearms in Anderlecht. Last week, there were two such incidents in the vicinity of Clemenceau metro station. In one of these a man sustained serious injuries when he was shot in the leg.

Elsewhere in Anderlecht a man was shot dead on the Peterbos social housing estate. Last week’s shootings were linked to a feud between two rival drug gangs. It is as yet unclear whether Tuesday evening’s incident was linked to last week’s shootings.

As a result of the increase in gun crime, extra police have been deployed in the worst-hit areas of Anderlecht.
