The supreme spiritual leader of the world’s Sikhs was invited to an official reception at Sint-Truiden town hall.  Just like the pope in Roman Catholicism, the Jathedar plays a key role in interpreting and upholding the Sikh faith.

The Jathedar Sahib decided on a stopover in Sint-Truiden mainly because the large Sikh community living there and because the largest Sikh temple in the Benelux is located in Sint-Truiden.

After the official reception at the town hall, the Jathedar was given a tour of the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady, where he was introduced to the history of Sint-Truiden and the heritage of Sint-Trudo, the city's founder. During the visit, the religious leader called for dialogue and mutual respect between different faith communities.

The Jathedar Sahib toured the Church of Our Lady.

Just like a papal visit

‘This feels great,’ beams councillor Pritty Kaur. ‘This man is our version of the pope. It's like a dream come true. We were able to show him our city and we were able to tell him a bit more about Sint-Truiden.’

It was also an emotional moment for Pritty Kaur. ‘It was quite an honour, especially since he asked me to keep working hard for all the people of Truiden. As the first Sikh city councillor, I think that is hugely important.’

During his visit, the Jathedar Sahib also visited the church’s treasury and was told more about how the city’s administration works.

Mayor Ludwig Vandenhove was pleased to welcome the Sikh leader. ‘I think it is hugely important and it is an honour for the city. We respect all faith communities, everyone is equal.’ The visit did come as a bit of a surprise to the city council. ‘We only heard about it yesterday. We have learnt we can also expect a visit from the Indian ambassador at the end of March. It offers a lot of economic opportunities. We are definitely going to discuss the visit with employers’ organisation VOKA in preparation of the visit.’
