One person injured in second shooting near Clemenceau metro station in Anderlecht in 24 hours (VIDEO)
This is the second incident in a day in Anderlecht. Police are investigating if the two incidents are linked. The Brussels public prosecutor's office, forensic scientists and a ballistic expert all attended the scene and are conducting an investigation. Bullet casings were retrieved from the area.
The culprits fled the scene and are being tracked down. Investigators are trying to establish exactly what happened.
The victim was injured in the leg and taken to hospital where they are now in a stable condition. The events took place around 4 a.m.
The Clemenceau metro station was closed, but the metro continues to operate normally.
‘In 24 hours, we experienced 3 shootings in Brussels: 2 in Anderlecht and 1 in Sint-Joost,’ prosecutor Julien Moinil clarified.
Anderlecht mayor on the case
The office of Anderlecht mayor Fabrice Cumps says police numbers have been beefed up and every day local police are working with their federal colleagues to make Anderlecht neighbourhoods safe again. But the mayor concedes it is time for a general mobilisation.
2,000 arrests were made last year in Anderlecht alone in the fight against drug-trafficking. The Brussels public prosecutor's office is doing everything in its power to provide a structural solution to this phenomenon in the capital. The mayor’s office adds that prevention is also important as well as the work done by local associations and medical services with drug users.
Manhunt in metro tunnels yesterday
A manhunt was held in tunnels of the Brussels metro system yesterday after a shooting took place in the Jorezstraat in Anderlecht.
Two suspects fired machine guns on Wednesday morning and then fled into the Clemenceau metro station. It is thought the violence is linked to drug trafficking. There is no trace of the perpetrators at the moment.
