Prime minister Bart De Wever (Flemish nationalist N-VA) has delivered his new government’s first statement to parliament setting out the aims his coalition of Flemish nationalists, Christian democrats and socialists and Francophone liberals and centrists.
Mr De Wever commenced his overview of the planned actions of his government in French.
The journey ahead is like a healthy stroll, but more closely resembles a challenge or col in a cycling race like the Tour de France. But he added ‘those who manage to conquer the mountain can enjoy the view at the top.’
Prime Minister Bart De Wever said he understands the concerns many people have about his government’s pension plans. He insisted ‘the best time to plant a tree, colleagues, was 20 years ago. The second best time is now. Further delay would only make the measures to be taken heavier to bear,’ he told lawmakers during his statement to parliament on Tuesday afternoon.
‘This government has decided to assume its responsibilities and safeguard our pension system for the next 40 years, not so much for us, but for the generation of our children and grandchildren.’
Mr De Wever promised consultations with the social partners so that the measures ‘will also receive support and be effective’.
Parliament will debate the government declaration on Wednesday. A confidence vote is scheduled for Thursday 4:30 PM.
