Brussels police issued over 113,000 speeding fines last year. That’s an increase of 11.6 per cent compared to 2023. More than 800 drivers caught driving under the influence of drink or drugs saw their driving licence revoked.
Thousands of speeding tickets issued, 85 cars seized in Brussels last year
Brussels police’s traffic department revoked 659 licences from drink-drivers. A further 159 licences were seized from people driving under the influence of drugs. The figure includes licences withdrawn as a result of targeted police checks but also due to involvement in accidents.
45 million vehicles were subjected to speed checks in Brussels last year, both through mobile cameras and fixed devices. ‘This triggered 113,410 speeding fines, up 11.6 per cent on the year,’ police say. On the Vilvoordselaan one driver was caught speeding at 161 km/h instead of the permitted speed of 50 km/h. In the 30 km zone on Madridlaan, one driver was clocked speeding at 97 km/h.’
85 cars impounded
Brussels police say it’s not only motorists that are getting traffic tickets. ‘Last year 444 pedestrians were fined, as well as 1,243 cyclists and 1,441 drivers of electric scooters, for a variety of traffic offences,’ the police say.
Officers from the traffic department also impounded 85 vehicles in the Heizel area in a clamp down on ‘rodeo drivers’, a phenomenon involving drivers driving way too fast and doing dangerous manoeuvres.
