During the past few days several people suspected of having aided and abetted Abdesalem Lassoued have been arrested. They are believed to have help the terrorist get hold of the weapon he used in the attack in which he shot dead 2 Swedish football fans on the evening of 16 October 2023. A third Sweed was seriously injured. The attack was carried out just before Belgium’s European Championships qualifying match against Sweden.

Abdesalem Lassoued was shot dead by police the morning after the attack. The investigation into the attack has focussed on those that aided and abetted him. In recent weeks 2 more suspects have been arrested, 1 in Spain and 1 in the Netherlands.

The suspect that has been arrested in the Netherlands is a 25-year-old man. He was arrested in the town of Brunssum, in the Dutch Province of Limburg. He will appear in court in Amsterdam on Friday. There he will have the opportunity to contest being sent to Belgium to face questioning here. If the court approves the suspect’s transfer to Belgium, he will be sent here within 10 days.

Belgium has requested that both the suspect arrested in Spain and the suspect arrested in the Netherlands be sent here. The Federal Judicial Authorities say that "The current investigation is intended to examine their possible involvement in preparing the attack”.
