Never before was the average total length of traffic jams on Flemish motorways higher than in 2124. According to figures from the Flemish Transport Centre earlier this week, the average length of jams on our region’s motorways was 159km on weekdays.
159km is a significant increase on the average of 147km in 2023 and the weekday average of 142km of congestion recorded in 2019, the year before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
New monthly congestion records were set in ten out of twelve months in 2024. January and June were the only 2 months during which no new records were set. With an average of 206km of congestion on weekdays, November 2024 was the most congested month since the Flemish Traffic Centre started to compile statistics on the average length of jams in 2011.
A notable trend in 2024 was the longer duration of evening traffic jams. Jams in the evening often lasted for longer than those during the morning rush hour. Despite the general increase in congestion, traffic volumes, both for cars and lorries, remained slightly below pre-pandemic levels.
