Citroën vehicle recall makes itself felt in Belgium too: more than 70,000 cars sold here will have to have their airbags checked

The French carmaker Citroën has announced that it is recalling more than 70,000 C3 and DS3 cars that were sold in Belgium due to possible issues with their airbags. The recall in Belgium is part of a Europe-wide recall involving almost 869,000 vehicles.

The airbags in the cars were made by the Japanese company Takata that has since gone bankrupt. The inflators in the airbags have been found to contain chemicals that don’t age well and in some cases, they can cause the airbags to explode. The airbags were fitted in Citroën C3 phase II and DS3 cars that were produced between 2009 and 2019. Citroën is addressing the issue step by step.

The problem with the airbags is reported to be worst in Southern Europe as the chemicals deteriorate quicker in a warm and damp climate. A total of 102,000 cars were recalled there. The risk of the airbags exploding is lower in Northern European countries. Nevertheless, 71,333 vehicles are now being recalled in Belgium. In a statement the company said that “The recall will be done in phases. We will contact customers to plan a repair”.
