The combined police operation will get underway at 6pm on Friday and will run until 6am on Monday. Operation “Weekend without alcohol and drugs behind the wheel” takes place several times a year and is aimed at deterring motorists from getting behind the wheel of their vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In a statement the police say that "The use of alcohol and drugs is one of the biggest causes of road traffic accidents. Driving under the influence is irresponsible behaviour that can have irreversible consequences”.
During the previous “Weekend without alcohol and drugs behind the wheel” 1.35% of the motorists checked tested positive for either drugs or alcohol. In June 2024 this was 2,01%.
