Belgian FA sacks national men’s team coach Dominico Tedesco

The Belgian Football Association has announced that it is to part company with the national men’s team coach Dominico Tedesco. The German coach with Italian roots took over as the Red Devils’ head coach 2 years ago. However, enthusiasm about Tedesco soon turned to sharp criticism due to disappointing results in the run-up to, during and after the European football championships.

On Friday the Belgian FA’s Sport Committee decided that Dominico Tedesco’s contract that was due run until after the 2026 World Cup should be terminated with immediate effect. The Committee’s decision was endorsed by the FA’s board.

After a disappointing European Championships last summer Dominico Tedesco’s future became increasingly uncertain. In what was an easy group the Red Devils only qualified for the knock-out stage with difficulty. In the next round France proved too strong for the Belgians. Tedesco seemed uncertain both tactically and as regards communication with players and fans. The poor results continued into the Nations’ League campaign.

There was a brief improvement that failed to produce results against France and Italy. However, Tedesco was unable to shake off the feeling of negativity regarding his position as coach. Big name players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku didn’t help matters for Tedesco either. After a painful defeat away to Isreal it only seemed to be a matter of time before he would be shown the door.

Tedesco’s failure to comment on the draw for qualifying group for next year’s World Cup fueled speculation still further. It wasn’t a question of if Tedesco would be sacked, but when.

Dominico Tedesco's tenure as coach began promisingly 2 years ago with an away win against Germany. Both on and off the field the young coach’s style was seen as a positive contrast to that of his predecessor Roberto Martinez. He surprised with his choice of players, bringing in many young up and coming talents. He was praised for his tactical vision and the way he communicated with the press.

Tedesco was also initially praised for his handling of his much-discussed dispute with Thibaut Courtois. However, in hindsight, this proved to be a poisoned chalice that has haunted him ever since.

Dominico Tedesco ends his time as Belgian national team coach with 12 wins from 24 games. Under his stewardship the Red Devils drew 6 and lost 6 games.
