Price war between telecoms companies

In the month since the launch of the new cut-price telecom operator Digi market, some other operators have cut the prices of some of their monthly calls and data packages. VRT News has examined how the big three operators (Proximus, Orange and Telenet/Base have responded to their new cut-price competitor.

Published:

Orange

Telecom operator Orange announced the day after the launch of Digi that it is cutting the price of the calls and data packs with its own cut-price brand Hey!. As with Digi, the cost of 15GB of data and unlimited calls and texts has dropped to 5 euro.

However, Orange customers will see the amount they pay rise from 18 January. The price of the package that includes 6GB of data increased from 14 euro to 14.40 euro.

Proximus

Proximus has done pretty much the same as Orange. On 16 December, Proximus’ cut-price subsidiary Mobile Vikings announced that it was to offer its customers double the amount of mobile data, at no extra cost. For example, those that paid 10 euro/month for 4GB of mobile data, 150 minutes of call minutes and free texts now get 8GB/month.

Another Proximus subsidiary, Scarlet, also increased the amount of mobile data in its packages. With the cheapest Scarlet subscription of 8euro/month, you now get 5 GB of mobile data, rather than the 1 GB you got previously.

With Scarlet’s other packages you also get more data for the same price. For 10 euro you now get 10 GB, for 13 euro 20 GB and for 18 euro 40 GB. Only the most expensive Scarlet package includes unlimited domestic calls. The 8 euro and 10 euro monthly subscriptions include 300 minutes’ call time and the 13 euro subscription 600 minutes. Only in the 13 euro package is cheaper than the equivillant package with Digi.

In the packages currently offered by Proximus itself, only the price to call and surf outside Europe has changed. Since January, a Daily Roaming pass costs 7.49 euro or 13.49 euro per day, depending on the country the customer is in. That is a price increase of 1.54 euro.

Proximus’ 5GB mobile data formula, 150 call minutes and free SMS package costs 16.99 euro per month.

Base

Earlier this week BASE announced that it was increasing the amount of data in all its packages while keeping them at the same price. Base customers will now receive 15 GB of mobile data instead of 8 GB for the 15 euro package, 50 GB instead of 25 GB for the 20 euro package 90 GB instead of 50 GB for the 29 euro package and 300 GB instead of 120 GB for the 39 euro package. subscription.

For those that use a lot of Data (50GB and more)  BASE is cheaper than Digi.

BASE is also announced a web deal for new customers that sign up online between 13 January and 3 March. Anyone who signs up as a new customer online during this period will receive a lifetime price reduction 25%..

Customers of Base’s parent company Telenet will see no changes to what they pay. A package that includes 5GB of data and unlimited calls and texts will still cost 16.56 euro.

Digi

The new telecom operator Digi gives you 15GB of mobile data and unlimited calls and texts (just like Hey!) for 5 euro/month. Digi does only offer network coverage via 4G and not 5G for now though. Fibre-optic internet is available through Digi from 10 euros a month.
