International rail passengers should expect disruption to their journeys today as trade unionists take action in defence of their pensions.
A lot of regional trains to Maastricht (Netherlands), Luxembourg and Lille (France) have been cancelled, as have a number of Eurocity trains to and from the Netherlands. The Nightjet to Vienna and Berlin runs from Cologne (Germany) instead of Brussels.
An ‘alternative timetable’ with a reduced service is being implemented today as planned, says Belgian Rail spokesman Bart Crols.
Rail unions are organising strike action to allow railway staff to take part in a union demonstration in Brussels against planned pension reforms.
The disruption is severe: only 1 in 3 domestic IC trains are operating run. Local services and suburban networks are even more badly affected.
