Supermarket chain Delhaize has taken over Delfood. All Louis Delhaize stores and other outlets supplied by Delfood come under Delhaize control, in all some 325 outlets. Logistics services and the company’s head office will also be operated by Delhaize. The acquisition will be complete by the end of 2025.
The acquisition allows Delhaize to expand its network of outlets, strengthening its position on the retail market. ‘Delhaize wants to put its expertise in food and fresh produce at the disposal of Louis Delhaize,’ says Delhaize CEO Xavier Piesvaux. ‘We want to further develop the potential of Louis Delhaize stores and independent partner shops together with their experienced staff.’
Delfood's management team and employees will be retained, as will contracts with affiliated shops.
Delhaize and Delfood are now considering what steps to take to continue the acquisition process. Further details of the deal will not be disclosed until the acquisition agreement is approved by the Belgian Competition Authority (BCA).
Although the 2 groups share common family origins, they developed completely independently of each other. ‘With the acquisition, 2 companies from the same founding family again come together after more than 150 years,’ Mr Piesvaux said.
