Overtake with care!

Gritters do their work, rush hour calmer than usual

Flanders experienced a relatively calm morning rush hour despite the snow says Katrien Kiekens of the Roads Agency. ‘On the pictures coming into the Traffic Centre, we see that traffic is progressing steadily,’ she told VRT earlier this morning.

The traffic centre receives live images from cameras placed along busy roads. These show that snow mainly occurs in the south of Flanders.

1,900 tonnes of road salt were spread on Flemish regional roads last night. Some places are still being gritted. Snowploughs are also used to allow the gritters to be able to do their work.

Drivers are advised to keep their distance from the gritters and to not overtake them with speed, so that the drivers can do their work safely.  If several gritters are driving side by side, motorists are asked not to pass them.

Drivers are asked to drive slowly, moderate their speed and keep sufficient distance from those ahead. In particular, caution is required on bridges and on bends.

VRT traffic expert Hajo Beeckman sees no exceptional delays on Flemish roads.

There was a maximum 20-minute delay on the motorways into Brussels.  Around Antwerp it is even very quiet Hajo notes.

‘For now, there are even fewer traffic jams than on an average Thursday morning,’ Beeckman said earlier. Presumably many drivers stayed home for the day homeworking as a precaution.
