Belgium has been treated to two big heaps of snow in recent hours. In many places the snow lies thick on the ground. Elsewhere it has quickly changed to sludge. The Roads and Traffic Agency is asking motorists to drive with care due to icy conditions and has dispatched more than 500 gritting vehicles.
VRT weatherman Bram Verbruggen says ‘We are definitely not done with the snow yet’. When Bram woke up this morning, he also saw several centimetres of snow. Bram lives in the east of the province of Flemish Brabant. In the south of the Flemish provinces, a snow layer of up to 5 centimetres has formed. Locally even 10 centimetres have been measured.
‘In the north of the provinces of East and West Flanders, it is much less,’ Bram notes. There there is a greater chance of rain or melting snow. ‘In most other places in Flanders, there's light snowfall and it will remain that way for the next few hours,’ Bram said this morning. ‘We are definitely not rid of it yet.’
Only in the course of the morning will the snow leave Belgium very slowly, heading towards Germany. Behind it there are clear spells, but also some wintry showers with the chance of thunderstorms, some hail or some sleet, the weatherman warns. In the late afternoon it should become completely dry, with temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees and a weak to moderate wind from the west.
Next night we will get cold weather, with lows around -2 or -3 degrees. On the coast, temperatures remain 2 to 3 degrees above freezing. Bram urges people to clear any snow around your house tonight, as otherwise it will stay and freeze.
