With almost 850,000 visitors, Brussels landmark Atomium recorded another record year in 2024. The structure that dates from the 1958 World Fair proved especially popular among international visitors. The number of visitors from the People’s Republic of China increased by 230 per cent in comparison with the previous year.
The Atomium welcomed 844,427 visitors in 2024, slightly more than in 2023. According to the management, the figures confirm stable growth. In almost five years, visitor numbers increased by almost 30 per cent.
26 per cent of visitors hail from Belgium. Almost half live in Brussels. In 2024, more and more Flemings decided to make a trip to the Atomium, as did residents of the Walloon provinces of Liège and Hainaut.
Among international visitors, French, German and Italian nationals make up the top three, with further significant increases in tourists from the Netherlands and the UK.
The Atomium welcomed 25 per cent more visitors from the United States and 92 per cent more from India. The number of tourists from China even went up by 230 per cent.
Cultural offerings
The management says the good figures are largely due to cultural offerings at the Atomium. In February a new installation by the Visual System Collective will go on show. Earlier, the installation Echoes of Distant Lights by Brussels-based artist Antoine Goldschmidt was added.
In 2025, the Atomium plans to establish new partnerships with the sports world. ‘By collaborating with organisations that want to inspire Brussels's youth and recognise young talent, we hope to strengthen links with local communities,’ the management says.
There are also plans to expand the Atomium’s shop in the near future.
