The future of the Belgian Grand Prix is assured for the next few years at least. On Wednesday morning it was announced that a Grand Prix race will be held at the track in Liège Province each year for the next three years and on alternate years for the 4 years thereafter.
Spa-Francorchamps has long face stiff competition from tracks in other countries that are backed by cash-rich sponsors. The Belgian circuit is much loved by the drivers. However, the organisers have reached their limits financial.
This year the Belgian Grand Prix will take place between 25 and 27 July. For the coming years intensive lobby work has paid off. Formula 1 races will take place at Spa Francochamps in 2026 and 2027, 2029 and 2031.
The organisers of F1 has long been flirting with other interested parties from the US and Asia. This has put increasing pressure on European circuits. A place on the F1 calendar has become extremely expensive.
The boss of Formula 1 Stefano Domenicali told journalists that " This follows clear investments at the circuit with also the construction of 2 large grandstands, more entertainment and a better fan experience. The Belgian Grand Prix was one of the races that formed part of our first championship in 1950, so at the start of our 75th anniversary year it is fitting that we can share this news”
Chairman Melchior Wathelet and CEO Vanessa Maes, said in a statement that they were “pround of the deal”. "This confirms the mutual trust that exists. We have adapted our infrastructure and are committed to providing a great fan experience.”
