Israeli minister tweets threats to Belgian activist

The columnist, writer and driving force behind the Hind Rajab Foundation Dyab Abou Jahjah is to lodge a complaint with the public prosecutor’s office after he received a threatening tweet from an Israeli government minister. Amichai Chikli is the Isreali Minister for diaspora affairs. It is likely that Dyab Abou Jahjah came to Mr Chikli’s attention after Hind Rajab Foundation lodged a complaint with a Brazilian court against an Israeli soldier that was holidaying in Brazil.

In the tweet addressed to Abou Jahjah, Israel's Minister of Diaspora and Combating Anti-Semitism wrote “Hello to our human rights activist. Watch out for your pager”. Mr Chikli was referring to the large-scale Israeli pager attack in Lebanon that injured more than 3,500 and killed 37 members of Hezbollah in September 2024. He also accused Dyab Abou Jahjah of being a member of Hezbollah.

Dyab Abou Jahjah responded with a tweet saying that "The Israeli government minister Amichai Chikli has openly threatened me. This is a blatant act of terrorism and sedition. I will file a lawsuit against him.”  He also tweeted, “I am honoured by your accusation that I am a member of Hezbollah. I respect them for their resistance against your invading army in Lebanon. However, I simply don’t adhere to their ideology".

Won’t be travelling abroad

In a piece he wrote for the daily ‘De Morgen Dyab Abou Jahjah said “The security services had already advised me not to travel abroad for the time being. This new message is really incitement to violence. There only has to be one fool with a gun who gets something into their head because of this kind of message”.

Hind Rajab Foundation

Dyab Abou Jahjah may have come into the Israeli minister's sights because his organisation, the Hind Rajab Foundation, filed a complaint with Brazilian prosecutors against an Israeli soldier, Yuval V. The soldier is accused of committing war crimes in Gaza.

The Hind Rajab Foundation compiles files on Israeli soldiers that share images of possible human rights violations on their social media. Once these soldiers are abroad, the organisation files a complaint with the prosecutor’s office in the country that the soldier has travelled to. Yuval V.'s case file includes video footage, geolocation data and photos that showed how he personally planted explosives and participated in the destruction of entire neighbourhoods in Gaza. Brazil decided to investigate, but the soldier managed to escape to Argentina with the help of Israel. It is unclear where he is now.
