Fly-tippers dump mountain of rubbish at the side of the Brussels Orbital: “No cameras and no social control”

An ever-growing pile of rubbish that has been left by fly-tippers has been lying for days along the side of the Brussels Orbital Motorway between the Cora Hypermarket and the Sint-Pieters-Leeuw junction in the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht. But who should clean it up? The municipality says that the given that the motorway is a “regional road” it is the Brussels-Capital Region that should clear up the mess. The Brussels waste disposal agency Net Brussel says that it will clear the rubbish, most of which is building waste, as soon as possible.

However, Net Brussels’ spokesman Adel Lassouli told VRT News that “We will have to sit down with Brussels Mobility (the regional transport agency ed.) to examine who will actually do it. Net Brussels is working almost non-stop clearing fly-tipping all over the region, but not on the Orbital Motorway. This is an unusual and tricky place. We will have to examine how the safety of our staff can be ensured and if the insurance cover extends to them working on the motorway”.

Nevertheless, Mr Lassouli assures us that the rubbish will be collected. “But there is no guarentee that the fly-tippers won’t return to the same place in a couple of days". He adds that it is very difficult to keep places like this and the Vilvoordselaan in Neder-over-Heembeek clean. “There are no cameras and there is hardly any social control. The fly-tipping happens at night”.

The municipal authorities in nearby Sint-Pieters-Leeuw say that it is regretable that the rubbish has been there for so long. The Alderman responsible for the environment and waste disposal in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw Jeroen Tiebout told VRT News that “People tells us about this. A lot of our residents take that junction and tell is to do something about it. But we are not responsible for cleaning it up. If it was on our territiory it would have been cleared quickly, because rubbish attracts more rubbish”.
